Inspired #405 - YVY MARAEY

YVY MARAEY teams up with rapper Raiza Biza on latest single ‘Water’.

‘Water’ is a multi-cultural coalesce, with the half Brazilian artist working alongside New Zealand born talent: guitarist/producer Simon Abela, singer songwriter/producer Noah Slee, and Rwandan– Kiwi wordsmith Raiza Biza. The track was born out of the lockdown period and has patiently been awaiting its release until now, with its surface being as hypnotically rippling as its title.

She took a moment to talk to us about the inspirations behind her music.

Who are your top three musical inspirations and why?
Frank Ocean because for me he is the king of creating modern as well as timeless music and I literally love all of his songs he is one of my all time favourites!

Jorge Aragão is a Brazilian samba singer and composer he has such a warm voice it always feels like someone hugs me when I listen to him also I’m just a big samba fan. It always changes my mood when I’m not feeling good. Samba is like therapy to me.

Sade is simply my queen love her songs her voice never get tired of her beautiful music.

Is there a certain film that inspires you and why?
Into the wild by Sean Penn is for me a very inspiring movie the idea of breaking out of the system and to become completely self sustained is something that always interested me.

What city do you find the most inspiring and why?
Rio de Janeiro is the city where my dad is from and for me also the most inspiring one. The unique nature where the city is located in is absolutely mindblowing and combined with its beautiful culture of music, dance and food is something else.

Who is the most inspiring person to you and why?
I would say my grandmother she is an absolute force. She is the most positive and disciplined person I know I admire that. She always makes a joke and wants everyone around her simply to have a good time.

What were your inspirations when writing your new track?
The song was written by Noah Slee and Raiza Biza so this question is not applicable .

How would you like to inspire people?
I would like to inspire people with my music. I would like people to not think in boxes but to think outside the norm and to never let someone else make you feel like you can’t achieve something you dreamed of. You are your only limit. At the end of the day if we aren’t happy we will also not be able to spread love so try to focus first on becoming the best version of yourself and everything else will follow I believe.
