Eden Rain – ‘Terry and Julie’
Indie pop newcomer Eden Rain tells an unconventional British love story in new single ‘Terry and Julie’.
Placing heart-on-sleeve songwriting at the forefront of her work, Rain has quickly become known for writing candid songs detailing her personal struggles. The London-based artist’s recent EP ‘GUTTER VISION’ was some of her most honest and vulnerable work to date. Exploring everything from mental health to toxic relationships, the record offered an intimate look into Rain’s mind.
Despite the EP only debuting a couple of months ago, Rain is already back with her first single since the release, ‘Terry and Julie’. The thought-provoking track moves away from the rising star’s usual autobiographical songwriting style, and instead details the fictional story of long-lost lovers reconnecting. Speaking on the meaning behind the track, Rain states:
“I took inspiration from one of my favourite songs ‘Waterloo Sunset’ and wrote about the Terry and Julie in it that meet at Waterloo station every Friday night. The idea sort of snowballed quite quickly… and I reimagined it as a sort of middle-aged crisis love affair where they’ve gone on to marry other people but they’re reconnected later in life and realising that they have feelings for each other etc. So yeah it’s a summery love song anthem meets prime time BBC ONE Drama starring Surrane Jones.”
Driven by foot-tapping beats and laidback guitar melodies, the track perfectly encapsulates the sense of nostalgia and time passing by. Alongside intricate instrumentation, moving lyricism poetically describes the complexities of life fading away when the couple are together. With an earworm chorus consisting of melodic rhythms and echoey hooks, the atmospheric production of the track cleverly compliments its heart-warming storyline.
It is ultimately Rain’s ethereal vocals that complete the piece. Showcasing a deep and soulful voice, the songstress’ leading vocals and angelic harmonies further add to the track’s blissful sense of escapism.
Alongside being a dreamy anthem to soundtrack the summer months, ‘Terry and Julie’ once again secures Eden Rain as one of the most exciting upcoming artists.
