In Conversation With #261 - Connie Talbot

Platinum selling singer-songwriter Connie Talbot continues to dazzle us with her brand new EP ‘Growing Pains’.

The stunning four-track project narrates the young artist’s journey through the flows of love, loss, and learning about herself. Much like a camera's lens capturing fleeting moments, this self-penned project immortalises the diverse spectrum of emotions that constitute the deeply personal voyage of navigating heartbreak and discovering restoration.

She took a moment to talk to us about how the EP came together.

Hey there Connie - how are you? So your EP is out now - how does it feel to have it out there in the world?
I'm great thank you for asking! I was actually really nervous to release the whole EP because the songs are so much more personal lyrically and different musically to anything I have released before. It felt like i was releasing pages of my diary. But I am so happy the songs are now out, there's something really empowering about writing feelings into songs and releasing them. It's almost drawing a line under that emotion and being able to revisit whenever I want to! I hope people can relate some way to the EP, and take something from it.

It is called ‘Growing Pains’ - what is the meaning behind that?
The title of the EP is actually from one of the songs on the EP called growing pains, which was about the struggles of growing up and how we inevitably learn lessons and grow from them. For me it was about struggles growing up in the music industry but now that made me who I am today, they were just growing pains!
The whole EP has that theme for me, so Growing pains seemed to be the only title to go for!

Where was it recorded? Any behind the scenes stories from the creative process you are happy to share with us?
recorded Growing Pains EP with Emily Philips and Ant Whiting at their house! Co-writing with Emily and production with Ant.
It was such a dream to work with them, they are absolute legends and we have built such a strong friendship though talking about our emotions for lyrics 24/7.

What are the key themes and influences on the EP?
I would say the key theme in this EP is growth!
I would love if one person listened to the EP and decided that it's okay to struggle, and it's okay to lean into those intense emotions and learn from them. Look back on them as growing pains and embrace growth.

If the EP could be the soundtrack to any film - which one would it be and what?
This is a tough question! I recently just watched Barbie and I think emotions go from 0-100 really quick. So does my song Growing Pains to Roses so I think it could work! Lol

Do you have a favorite lyric on the EP - if so, which one and why?
"Sorry to lay you to rest in my head, it's just easier pretending you're dead"
I like this lyric, I just think it's lighthearted and cheeky lol. I'm not into horoscopes really, but if you were to describe a Scorpio, I am the definition haha. Forgive but never forget!

Now the EP is out there - what next?
The plan is more music! I have the bug for wanting to release more and more, and also live gigs, my favourite part is being able to see people face to face and share music. I can't wait!
