Inspired #419 - Lo Lauren

It has been quite the start for artist Lo Lauren - with only one release to her name - the pop-powerhouse has already gained the attention of BBC Radio 1 and ‘Track of the Week’ on her local BBC Introducing show. From that Lo Lauren has amassed over 100,000 streams across her streaming platforms. She brings in the next in her music arsenal with latest track ‘Only One on Earth’.

She took a moment to talk to us about the inspirations behind her music.

Who are your top three musical inspirations and why?
TAYLOR SWIFT - I am inspired by her commitment to songwriting, forever having new ideas and being able to explore concepts in such interesting ways.
KATY PERRY - the ultimate pop energy that I love. Huge anthemic singalong stadium smashes - i love how good Katy’s music feels and how creatively she brings it to life.
GWEN STEFANI - she has such a bold and brave style with KILLLLER vocal performance. I love the distinct grit and energy that oozes through her songs and voice.

Is there a certain film that inspires you and why?
I love all things Baz Luhrmann - in particular Moulin Rouge. This film and his general style, inspires me a lot as it’s so entertaining - it’s musical theatre, it’s no chill, it’s so expressive that it keeps you engaged the whole way through. I love the melodrama, the colours and how crazy it is!

What city do you find the most inspiring and why?
At the moment I’d say london - I am in soho all the time and I’ve never felt more at home there, amongst the glitter and the trash. The thing I love about london is there’s something for everyone - so many different areas and vibes that you can tap into. I feel like it also has this motivating energy for me where if I’m in town and bopping about then I’m being productive and getting stuff done, which helps my “must be proactive” brain.

Who is the most inspiring person to you and why?
This is a hard as I have a lot of people that inspire me for different reasons and in different parts of my life. But I'd say in terms of career Lady Gaga - she is just absolute boss. I love what she stands for, her incredible cross over into acting and how brave of a performer she is. She is a true icon when it comes to pushing boundaries in the pop space. And a personal goal of mine is to write the music and star in a musical film which she has done at the highest level, so yeah big inspo for me.

What were your inspirations when writing your new track?
We were talking a lot about unrequited love and rejection - something I’ve experienced a lot. We spoke about different scenarios and tapped into a time where I thought I could feel a vibe with someone, so I told them I liked them and they flat out pied me. Rejection is general, in music particularly, can lead to all our bad thoughts spiraling in our heads and I know from personal experience it’s really easy to think the worst and suddenly feel like you’ll never make it or never meet someone and be alone forever! So that whole feeling and process is what inspired only one on earth.

How would you like to inspire people?
I’d like people to feel safe in my music - like they can express themselves and their feelings and whatever way they want and it’s ok. I am generally a really positive person and hope that threads through my art - I think the world is scary and so negative at times, and so I want my music to feel like a happy, hopeful escape from all that, and a reminder to try and look at the brighter side always.
I try to learn and do as much as possible myself where I can - like editing videos for example - I had no idea but I knew I wanted to express myself visually through content, so onto YouTube tutorials we go! Hopefully that inspires people to just go for it, just try cos if you really wanna do something, you just gotta believe in yourself and make it happen.
