Dirty Blonde - 'Northern Twang'

Fierce female alternative-rock duo Dirty Blonde have marked their bold return with their brand new single ‘Northern Twang’.

Dirty blonde are an emerging alternative-rock band from Manchester that have had a smashing debut in the music scene, grabbing the attention of industry professionals at BBC Radio 1 and Radio X as well as landing spots on major Spotify playlists and earning a feature on Channel 4’s Sunday Brunch. Their debut EP ‘Favourite Record’ has opened up many doors for them on the UK live music scene, and they were praised as “one of the most exciting acts to come through Radio 1’s Future Alternative”. The duo has performed on over 20 stages throughout the summer of 2024 including Isle of Wight Festival and The Great Escape. They have shared the stage with legends such as Frank Carter and the Sex Pistols.

‘Northern Twang’ is said to be the first Dirty Blonde song they ever wrote, and it definitely does not disappoint what with its driving energy, high quality production and infectious hooks. The duo’s Kings of Leon influences are evident throughout this track due to its bluesy undertones and dynamic riffs. The song tackles the subjet of overlooking red flags when you’re in love with someone because you want to convince yourself that this person is right for you even though you’re aware that something is off. Lyrics such as “He’s the devil and his mates as well” are successful at conveying the frustration of feeling trapped in a consuming love that you aren’t quite ready to escape. The first verse is explicit in its description of the person that the song is about, with lines such as “northern twangs on top of husky tones” and “he’s got flawless skin laced on wicked bones”. The implication is that the person singing is justifying the emotional abuse that is being inflicted upon them because they find their partner physically attractive.

The track is accompanied by a captivating music video that features Allis Mackay and Hayley Tait dressed up in leather jackets and leopard print while rocking out in front of a red backdrop. This release marks a new musical era for ‘Dirty Blonde’, both sonically and visually.

‘Northern Twang’ is the lead single from a bigger body of work that is due to be announced before the end of the year, so make sure to stay tuned to see what else this power duo has in store for the near future.
