Divorce - 'Gears'
After a hugely successful 2023, Divorce unleash their first glimpse of new material in the form of the new single: ‘Gears’.
Nottingham’s rising stars enjoyed a great reception to their 2023 EP ‘Heady Metal’ but have not rested on their laurels. The group have already- this year- been on the road with legendary bands The Vaccines and Bombay Bicycle Club. Divorce seem to be making their mark as a relentless group who effortlessly go from strength to strength.
The latest single, ‘Gears’, is further evidence of the band’s quality. Kicking off with a fuzzy guitar riff, the track progresses beautifully. What is originally a solitary guitar riff is swiftly met by a driving drum beat and another guitar. The early instrumentation builds up and brings in the vocals.
Lyrics and delivery are two things which are always striking in the band’s tracks. ‘Gears’ is the ultimate example of this. Co-vocalists Felix Mackenzie- Barrow and Tiger Cohen-Towell pair one another in such incredible fashion. The choruses of ‘Gears’ display the two harmonizing brilliantly. The rest of the group draw real attention to this with their range in sound. Most notable is the guitar which slows right down to build tension, before erupting as the chorus does.
‘Gears’ is a track that so many will relate to. Lyrics relating to juggling identities and the struggle and cost of trying to be everything to everyone will certainly hit home with many listeners. Mackenzie-Barrow has commented on the track, saying: “I was spending all of my time working or playing shows and couldn’t maintain any kind of social life or keep up with the spending a social life felt it would cost. The song came out of those frustrations.”
The band have done an expert job in capturing this range of emotions, and so many will be grateful to hear Divorce talking about something that many people will relate to.
‘Gears’ is a brilliant single. It has everything from sincere lyricism to clever instrumentation… with some all-out rocking choruses too!
It’s no wonder Divorce are drawing attention from every angle… With songs like ‘Gears’, this attention won’t cease any time soon.
