Mayfire - 'Telephone'
York born band Mayfire’s new single ‘Telephone’ is a real and raw ode towards desperate love between two long-distance lovers. Whether we’ve experienced it to a greater or lesser extent, this is one that is sure to tug on your heart strings.
A major part of Mayfire’s success has been through exploring the highs and lows of young love and conflicting feelings in an ever-growing online world. Their ability to bridge the gap between the artist and fans through catchy riffs, undeniable rhythm, and relatable heartfelt lyrics has built an unwavering connection with supporters. And with that said, loyal fans are delighted by the announcement of the band’s new single ‘Telephone’.
Members Bailey Furman, Hamish Hunter, David Porter, and Joe Hildreth formed the beginnings of their now well-established indie-rock band back in 2023. Creating music reminiscent of The Killers, Catfish & the Bottlemen, and The Wombats, their capacity to stay true to themselves and their inspirations is something we can all appreciate. Current bands can often feel the pressure to venture into more modern sounds to stay relevant, risking losing interest from day-one supporters, so with Mayfire sticking to what they do best, it’s difficult not to be excited for a group bringing back the sounds of classic 2000s alternative rock.
Speaking on the new track, Mayfire describes it as a story of ‘…two people determined to keep their love alive in spite of being thousands of miles apart in different countries, climates, and cultures’. Lyrics found in their ear-worm chorus, ‘I want your love for my own/I’ll send you out down your telephone/You know we don’t have to be alone’ encapsulate a sense of longing, transporting us all into our teenage bedroom and talking for hours on the phone to a love interest. Raw guitar tones and tumbling drum beats keep a powerful driving force, hinting at the desperate undertones of the song. Carefully arranged busy chorus bridges mixed with slower, reflective verses create an unpredictable tempo, mirroring the rocky experiences of navigating young love.
Having gathered a large following soon after the birth of their band early last year, alongside being played on Radio 1 and Radio X, it’s a no-brainer that they started to sell out shows. Finding themselves playing at ESNS Eurosonic Festival in the Netherlands mid-January this year, a festival dedicated to promoting up and coming European artists, has given Mayfire a sturdy backbone for their current and future successes.
In light of their newest release, the quartet are set to announce various UK tour dates, with their first gig kicking off on the day of their single release of ‘Telephone’ (March 29th, 2024) at the O2 Academy Islington, joining The Kites, Diving Bell, and Teddie for a night of celebration and euphoric indie-rock riffs.
