Rat Tails - 'Flowers'

South London based quintet Rat-Tails share new post-break-up coming of age single ‘Flowers’.

The dream rock Rat Tails share their new shape-shifting blend of psych-folk, dream-pop and indie-disco show stopping single, ‘Flowers. This quintet consists of singer and songwriter Courtney and guitarist Chris, formed amid the isolation in 2020. And after their 2022 debut single release ‘Spines’, Rat-Tails found their fellow rodents, bassist Samuel, clarinettist Frankie and drummer Pitt.

And with only a handful of releases into their career, Rat-Tails ‘dream rock’ sound has already shown itself as one of great dexterity and ambition. With their intimate debut ‘Spines’ taking listeners on a melancholic journey, followed by their 2023 single ‘Coke in the 70s’ was the complete opposite, marrying shoegaze with Latin Lounge. But onto their earworm new single, ‘Flowers’ which is a seamless blend of genres they do best, dream pop and indie disco.

On the new single, ‘Flowers’ frontman Courtney explains that “You’ll never know all of the Flowers” verbatim, was a response that their long-term ex-partner had admitted when he “loved the ‘idea’ of me, rather than actual me’ After processing the end of this relationship and the weight of his misogyny, I began a journey of discovering what I wish to do in life.” Courtney continues that ‘Flowers’ is about embracing your own personal metamorphosis, the ugly and beautiful parts of you and your history. The sound of this single reflects that metamorphosis that Courtney speaks about, as “it’s so colourful, full of twists & turns. It plays with genres, resulting in a dreamy and chaotic song about embracing your life journey.

Rat-Tails have been a regular and much-loved feature on the London grassroots circuit over the last 18 months, with the band sharing stages with the likes of Girl Ray, Cotoba, Tapir!, Honeyglaze and The Last Whole Earth Catalog. With them winning early press backing from indie champions Groupie, Hard of Hearing, Still Listening, Get in Her Ears, The New Age Magazine and Post-Brexit Pop.

‘Flowers’ and previous singles by Rat-Tails are infectious and it is impossible to stop listening to these ethereal tracks, that worm their way into your head and heart. Rat-Tails are a band to keep watch of.
