Swim Deep - ‘First Song’
Unleashing raw expression and escapism in their latest track - Swim Deep are back.
Years ago, Swim Deep dominated the indie scene. With their hits ‘Honey’ and ‘King City’, they essentially encompassed the typical ‘indie dreamboat’ type band. As of recent, they've been relatively low-key compared to their prolific touring in the past, so seeing them on the road again and putting out new music will undoubtedly bring excitement to many longtime fans.
Since their last full-length album dropped in 2015, fans look forward to what's next from them following the announcement of their new album ‘There’s A Big Star Outside’. The album is set for release on June 7, right before their summer tour kicks off. This means fans who have purchased tickets can look forward to enjoying a set packed with their latest tracks
Their latest single, ‘First Song’, released via Submarine Cat Records is the second single to be taken from the latest album produced by Bill Ryder-Jones. The comment section of their Instagram is brimming with eager fans craving more, and one particular comment that stands out to me is: “This song gives me this feeling of nostalgia and instability, in search of a maturity that is difficult to achieve” - this explains the track perfectly.
Alongside this comment, the feed is overflowing with an abundance of heart-eye and love-heart emojis. It's evident that this band holds a special place in the hearts of their fans, who eagerly embrace their return time and again. No matter how long they are quiet for, fans immerse themselves in whatever content they have to offer, emphasising just how much they are adored in the scene.
‘First Song’ delves into their band's affinity for gauzy shoegaze, blending it with gentle swaying melodies and some of singer Austin Williams' finest vocals yet. With deeply personal lyrics, it serves as another indicator, following their comeback single ‘How Many Love Songs Have Died In Vegas?’, of Swim Deep's resurgence, further heightening anticipation for their upcoming album. This single marks a potential entry into a new era for the band.
Frontman, Austin Williams, talks about the track:
“This song came about after Cavan got my heavy into Mogwai, and I got obsessed with this arpeggiated loop I had made. It’s one of those songs that just came crashing in and the baseline made itself. I wanted the driving force of a song that meant business. The lyrics are centred around my childhood dream to live a suburban life with two parents, two cars, a cat, a ‘nuclear’ family. However then reflecting that actually what I had was the making of me, and it was actually pretty cool. It offered me raw love, freedom, escapism, and I wouldn't change it for all the Renault Scenics, a big fancy summer holiday in the world.”
