Kate Nash - 'Space Odyssey 2001'
Kate Nash shares her love and hate for Stanley Kubrick’s masterpiece in a fun and instrumental single.
Kate Nash has always been a reference in music. From an indie pop idol discovered through MySpace to becoming an independent artist, she has lived through many changes in the music industry and was never afraid to speak up about the injustices and difficulties of being an independent artist.
Nash is ready for a new chapter with the release of Space Odyssey 2001, part of her forthcoming album 9 Sad Symphonies, set to be released June 21 on Kill Rock Stars.
As its title, is almost a movie soundtrack built in just one song: violins, guitars, drums and, of course, Nash’s unique voice.
If you’re familiar with her lyrics, you’ll be glad to see that her talent for writing songs about love with humorous anecdotes has only improved.
The song is a recollection of memories from her first date with her now-partner when she thought it was a good idea to watch 2001: A Space Odyssey. “Is a love song about my partner who I was friends with for many years, but we met up at just the right time in the summer of 2017, both single and very unexpectedly fell in love. Romance came back into my life in this effervescent, joyful and healing way. I’d been through so much pain and toxicity.”
Apart from music, she stared on the Netflix show Glow (2017) and her documentary, Kate Nash: Underestimate the Girl (2018), where she talks about how she went from indie pop idol with her first record Made of Bricks to an independent artist who refused to play by the mainstream rules.
The Space Odyssey 2001 video is also a statement that even though she is part of a record label, she’s still going to do her own thing.
Directed, shot and stared by herself, it is a fun music video to watch and takes you back to the start of Nash’s career, when she would use Barbies and Kens way before it was cool. This time, a person with a horse mask is her co-star.
“I shot this video just outside of Yosemite in a tiny cabin in the middle of nowhere with my boyfriend. We were living in California at the time, and one of the benefits of living there is the access to national parks and proximity to vast expansive beauty. We would take a lot of road trips and went back to this cabin a number of times around my birthday. It became a refuge during the pandemic. Total escapism, wilderness and peace. We shot this video with just the two of us. The idea was inspired again by musical theatre, but also I guess my love of horror bleeds into a lot of visuals. I love using horror to represent emotional trauma.”
Even though her relationship is going very well, Nash claims is not a good idea to watch Kubrick’s iconic movie on a romantic date.
“It's the wrong film for a date, but I love the film. I like making jokes in songs. I like that there's this beautiful love song but it's also complaining about this critically acclaimed film being too long. I don't recommend it for a first date!”
Kate Nash will be playing Glastonbury and has already a sold out show at Koko London. You can still get tickets for the extra date on 28th November.
