Opus Kink - 'I Wanna Live With You'
Filth-funk connoisseurs Opus Kink present a sultry, sinister and synth-laden rendezvous on their first release of 2024, ‘I Wanna Live With You’.
Brighton post-punk outfit Opus Kink have established a name for themselves with their unique mash-up of punk and jazz, as well as touches of country and Latin textures for a completely enigmatic listening experience. With the success of their debut EP ‘Til The Stream Runs Dry’ in 2022 and subsequent ‘My Eyes, Brother’ in 2023, the sextet, led by magnetic frontman Angus Rogers, have bewitched crowds across the UK and EU with their memorably rowdy live shows. On 7th May, they released their first single of the year ‘I Wanna Live With You’ via Hideous Mink Records & SO Recordings. This comes alongside the announcement of their biggest headline show to date at Camden’s iconic Electric Ballroom on 11th December, following a run of EU festival performances.
Speaking on the new track, Rogers has said: “We, Opus Kink, step once more into the light with new single ‘I Wanna Live With You’, a slice of gutter-pop romance concerning our desire for everlasting and fatal love. Take deep into your heart its voluptuous bassline, seductive overtones and irresistible beat, become infatuated with the navel-scream of its wild horns, and we could connect like we’ve never done before.”
Delving further into it, ‘I Wanna Live With You’ does play as a new means of connection for Opus Kink. While maintaining core elements of their enticingly murky sound with funk-driven bass, erratic brass and blood-curdling cries, it creeps ever so slightly into 80s-inspired pop territory. The percussion is subtle, carried by a leading kick and tightly woven with a rise and fall bass groove for a mesmerisingly serpentine flow. Yet, there is room for building suspense with moments where the riffs take on surfy grunge textures and the horns erupt into blood-curdling shrieks. Lyrically, much of the band’s work incorporates motifs surrounding religion, death and rebirth in elegiac form with cryptic spells. ‘I Wanna Live With You’ delivers a direct proclamation, an eternal vow through its chorus through high vocal notes that nearly turn to a whisper: “I wanna live with you. I wanna cry til my face is blue. I wanna die with you. I wanna do whatever people do.” The accompanying film-noir style music video accentuates the dark, ominous tone of the track with eerie visuals, but the last thing you’ll want to do is look away. Overall, ‘I Wanna Live With You’ is yet another fantastic addition to Opus Kink’s broody catalogue. It invites you to get lost, but does not guarantee that you’ll find a way out.
Opus Kink’s tantalising new single is available to stream across all digital platforms, and tickets for their Electric Ballroom show are now on sale.
