Wunderhorse - 'Silver'

Rock band Wunderhorse lure us further into the world of upcoming album ‘Midas’ with new single ‘Silver’.

Wunderhorse was formed by bandmates Jacob Slater, Harry Fowler, Jamie Staples, and Peter Woodin during lockdown – one of the few good things to come out of the Covid pandemic. With front man Slater’s experience with already being in a band previously (the Dead Pretties which disbanded in 2017), it seemed Wunderhorse allowed the group to scratch the itch that Dead Pretties couldn’t.

With the release of their debut album, ‘Cub’, back in October 2022, it was clear that the band had something special to offer. Racking up tens of millions of streams across various platforms, their fanbase started to flow in thick and fast – allowing them to transform their days of playing in pub basements to selling out London’s O2 Forum.

Wunderhorse’s new single ‘Silver’ is the third release from their upcoming album, due to be unleashed into the hands of both old and new fans on August 30th. The track begins with simple guitar strumming and the beautifully raw voice of Jacob Slater. No matter the approach, the collective ideas of Wunderhorse’s band members always manage to produce an authentic, unrefined sound that mimics the feeling of being stood next to a speaker in a small venue that you’ve come across, having just realised you’ve stumbled upon your new favourite band.

Speaking on how he wanted the album to resonate, Slater says “When we first went into the studio to make this record, the only thing we were sure about was how we wanted it to sound; very imperfect, very live, very raw; no frills…”

Consistent guitar strumming patterns and a steady drumbeat makes for a comfortable walking-pace beat throughout the track. Out of the three songs already released from their ‘Midas’ album, ‘Silver’ is the tamest of the lot, while still maintaining a concealed angst and the undeniable sound of Wunderhourse – “Everyone has elements of their makeup that they’d rather not admit to or keep locked away and never look at. That’s what ‘Silver’ is about. Kind of.”

With the disciplined use of instruments that would usually make a much heavier appearance in their songs, ‘Silver’ makes for a quietly angry/confused/self-aware/accepting tune that builds onto the world of ‘Midas’.

Wunderhorse begin their headline tour this autumn, venturing into uncharted territory of bigger and more iconic venues, including a stop at London’s O2 Academy Brixton. With their release of ‘Midas’ on August 30th and the band previously selling out their headline shows months in advance, get your hands on some tickets and bask in the glory of a total hard-core sweat-fest Wunderhorse gig!
