Introducing #282 - Wax Head

Let us introduce you to garage-punk band Wax Head - hailing from Manchester, they have just released their new track 'Rusty Cutter' and are due to headline London's Shacklewell Arms on the 15th October.

Known for their high-octane live shows and distinctive garage-psych sound, Wax Head have shared stages with LA Garage rockers Flat Worms, Frankie and The Witch Fingers as well as Dublin’s Melts, as well as being championed by BBC Radio 6’s Huw Stephens. They took a moment to talk to us about their music.

Hey there Wax Head- how are you? So your track ‘Rusty Cutter’ is out now - can you tell us what it’s about?
We are all doing great thanks, keeping busy preparing for our UK/Europe tour in October.
Rusty Cutter is a song about growing apart from people. Musically, we wanted to write a simplistic garage song, incorporating elements of psychedelia to keep it concurrent with our previous work.

Where are you from and what are your favourite things to do there?
We are from all over the UK. Lewis and Evan are both from Somerset so just drink cider and sit in fields when they are home and Harry is from round the corner in Devon so I’d assume he also likes to do the same. Archie is from Oldham and listens to jazz or something…

What are the key influences when it comes to your music?
Individually our music tastes vary, which I believe is evident in the way we write. A Wax Head set can hurtle through experimental noise, 60s garage, psychedelia and punk rock in a couple of songs; however, I would say the underlying key influence for us is the Californian garage-punk scene and the psych-rock coming from Australia.

How would you describe your sound to someone who has never listened to your music before?
Angular, noisy, erratic… We get told “that was one of the loudest sets I’ve seen” a lot after people see us for the first time.

Now the track is out there – what’s next for you?
First on the agenda is our October UK/Europe tour, starting at the Shacklewell Arms, London and finishing on mainland Europe. We will be playing festivals, Left of the Dial, Rotterdam and They Are Going To Be Big in Paris which will be supplemented by a string of headline sets across France, Belgium and the Netherlands. Our plan is to play as many gigs as possible and we are excited to debut all the new material we have been working on.
