In Conversation With #208 - Fool Nelson
Freshly signed to AWAL - hailing from Perth in Australia, indie rock trio Fool Nelson have just released their explosive new EP 'Bad Dreams'.
Through blistering riffs, heart-on-sleeve lyricism and rollicking choruses, 'Bad Dreams' cements Fool Nelson's place as one of Australia's most exciting young bands. The five tracks channel the anxieties of growing up with a restless, big-hearted energy - songs written first and foremost for the live stage, where they hit hardest.
They took a moment to talk to us about how the EP came together.
Hey there Fool Nelson, how are you? So your EP is out now – how does it feel to have it out there?
Hey! We’re good! Currently sitting on a plane. We’re midway through our EP tour. It feels great to have it out. The songs have been going down really well live and it’s been super refreshing playing some new tunes.
It is called ‘Bad Dreams' – what is the meaning behind that?
Yep. Bad Dreams is the name of the second single. We felt it kind of just summed up the EP well. It’s also probably our favourite song on the EP.
Where was it recorded? Any behind the scenes stories you are willing to share with us?
We recorded it with Andy Lawson in Perth. We’ve been recording with Andy for a while. He’s such a legend and we have a really good connection with him. Half the songs were written on a writing trip in Margaret River and the other half were written in Darcy’s disgustingly hot sun room.
What are the key influences behind the EP?
I guess the main influence behind the EP is navigating early adulthood. Learning how to deal with anxiety and how this affects your relationships and those around you.
If the EP could be a soundtrack to any film – which one and why?
Nacho Libre. That will forever be our favourite film.
Do you have a favourite lyric on the EP? If so, which one and why?
Umm. In ‘Don’t Feel Right’ there’s a part I sing in the bridge:
“In this mess I’m making. I’m not broke, I'm breaking. It’s the chance I’m taking. I know I’ve been wrong, and that don’t feel quite right.”
That always feels good to sing.
Now the EP is out there – what next for you?
We’ll finish off our Aus tour. Then we’ve got some festivals over Summer. After that we’re gonna get stuck into an Album before heading over to the UK/EU in May.
