Artist Of The Week #302 - VC Pines
This week's Artist of the Week is London artist VC Pines - who has just released his hotly-tipped EP 'Viole(n)t Colour'.
VC Pines' new EP 'Viole(n)t Colour' is a raw, deeply personal collection born from the aftermath of emotional and creative burnout. Emerging from a period of intense isolation and exhaustion, after releasing the 'MRI' album independently, navigating two self-managed tours, as well as watching personal relationships unravel, the EP captures both the fragility and resilience of rebuilding from nothing.
He took a moment to talk to us about how the EP came together.
Hey there VC Pines, how are you? So your EP is out now – how does it feel to have it out there?
Hey, I’m doing good thanks, the EP is finally out in the world! It’s something I’ve held onto for a while so feels good to put it out now the time is right. You really have to pick your moments when you’re managing yourself as well as self-releasing but yeah, glad things came together and I can get Viole(n)t Colour off my chest!
It is called ‘Viole(n)t Colour' – what is the meaning behind that?
VC stands for Violet Colour, all the songs on the EP are really close to home and more personal than ever. I’ve had a lot of ups and downs making this and at times my head has been the most chaotic its ever been but we made it out alive. The play on words reflects the underlying tone of some of the songs on the EP and my headspace whilst making them.
Where was it recorded? Any behind the scenes stories you are willing to share with us?
It was recorded in a few places, either at my home studio, Soho Studios with Louis Isaacs or with Daniel Hamylton-Nuamah at his studio too.
What are the key influences behind the EP?
ME! I feel like this EP feels more me than anything I’ve made before. I listen to so many different forms of music and I feel like it all seeps in together. I’ve definitely used more sampling techniques with this EP than previous work which I feel artists like Mount Kimble and Outkast have influenced. There’s also some solid guitar parts on the EP, I was slamming the Mk.Gee album when it came out so I feel like that naturally fell in too.
If the EP could be a soundtrack to any film – which one and why?
Good Time. There are so many ups and downs, intimate moments and chaotic messes.
Do you have a favourite lyric on the EP? If so, which one and why?
Like a moshpit at the orchestra. It’s the opening line of Chasing The Dragon. I feel like it perfectly describes making a mess of something that’s supposed to be perfect. The juxtaposition paints a really strong image in my head. Would love to film a literal scene of this somehow… one day eh.
Now the EP is out there – what next for you?
More music, more shows, more art.
