Confidence Man & JADE - 'Gossip'
“I don’t beat around the bush” - no, no Confidence Man certainly do not. This week, the Australian rave sensations Confidence Man finally dropped the song of the summer, ‘Gossip’, featuring pop icon JADE.
Many of us have been waiting for this clubland pop banger to be released since its debut during JADE’s packed-out Glastonbury set on the Woodsies Stage last month. Those lucky enough to actually get to Glasto were treated to a sweet, sweaty, dance-heavy surprise when Confidence Man stormed the stage to perform ‘Gossip’ live for the first time…while some of us watched in envy from our couches. The performance was an array of flashing lights, glitter and fierce choreography that secured Gossip’s position as summer anthem well before its release.
‘Gossip’ not only proves once again that Confidence Man are in a league of their own, but that JADE really is the new IT girl. Speaking on the track and their collaboration, Confidence Man said, “JADE put the cherry on top of this pop sundae and we can’t stop eating.” I think it’s safe to say everyone agrees. The track is a weird fusion of Confidence Man’s genre-defying noise and JADE’s infectious pop sound, and it just works. It’s chaos, but in the best way. It opens with a bouncy bass combined with well-timed breathy sighs, before tailspinning into a mix of jazzy synths and the sporadic strumming of a guitar throughout the chorus. It’s a track with many layers. With each listen, there is something new to focus on - the dial tone of the phone, the whispering underneath the beat. It is filled with fun, punchy lyrics that encompass the almost childlike behaviour that is “gossip” and has a sound that gets right under your skin, leaving you itching for more. Ultimately, it’s just FUN.
‘Gossip’ very much belongs in sweaty underground clubs, late nights in festival fields, it's even a perfect pick-me-up during early morning commutes. To quote a friend when we were discussing the track, “one word…BANGER.”
