dust - 'Drawbacks'
Aussie post-punk prodigies dust plants both feet firmly on the ground with new single Drawbacks.
Hailing from the great down under, Aussie post-punk band Dust have opened the gates and pushed out another incredible track for the world to see. This perplexing medley of melancholic madness is stunning. Dust use this song from the upcoming album “The Sky Is Falling”, releasing via Kanine Records, to steady their position in the post-punk genre very well. With sporadic guitars, high-tempo tempo, infectious hi-hat rhythms, and a fantastic, title-fight-esque bass line creates the perfect symphony to push the vocals onwards. The use of harmonics and fast picking lead lines over the trudging and down-trodden minor chord progression truly creates a listening experience reminiscent of many bands that they have drawn influence from.
Dust have been acknowledged by several outlets, including NME, Clash, and even YouTube’s own musical critic, Anthony Fantano. This is no surprise, as the sound they create brings forward stellar influences of the greatest post-punk and shoegaze bands; the influence of the likes Slowdive, Joy Division, and Sonic Youth evident in every note, forming a medley of beauty and chaos that reflects a lifetime of experiences with these artists.
Every note in this song is filled with purpose and played with conviction, and the drumming is exceptional, with an uptempo beat that drives the song forward, perfectly coexisting with the fast yet melancholic chord changes and lead lines emanating from the band’s guitar section, this is all ties together by the bassist using simple but effective, punchy root note line to act as the bridge between worlds for the rest of the band, making four minutes feel like a lifetime—in the best way. This track feels deep and beautiful, evoking a sense of wonder and curiosity. It poses existential questions about how we find our way and how everyone carves their own path, all set against a truly well-rounded backing track.
I am extremely excited for the upcoming releases that Dust have for us, as I truly believe there is something special emanating from these lads, they ooze talent and class, this genre has forever held a special place in my heart as I have always felt intense emotional connection to artists that are willing to open up and show the world their wiring, genres like this capture the human condition in their atmosphere and release them for people to experience life alongside. stick around because Dust is about to light the world on fire.
