Album Review - 'Last Dinosaurs - 'Yumeno Garden'

Australian indie band Last Dinosaurs have released their third album ‘Yumeno Garden’ which is their first release in three years. The album sees the band with a different line up and also a killer new sound which can only be described as a mix of Japanese tranquillity & westernised indie pop.

After two really successful albums Last Dinosaurs have gone away, found another source of inspiration and experimented with their sound in a really clever way which doesn’t take away the DNA of the band which the fans are familiar with. Singles like ‘Dominoes’ & ‘Eleven’ are great fast tempo indie rock tunes which will easily satisfy the die hard fans as they feature crunchy guitar sounds and catchy riffs.

However, for me, it’s the album tracks which makes ‘Yumeno Garden’ Last Dinosaurs most complete and eclectic project to date. For instance ‘Happy’ features more of an electronic dance vibe and ‘Everything Relative’ is a more darker song with distorted vocals, both songs are entirely different but fit together perfectly on the album because of the change in melodies.

Recording the album in Japan has really had a real influence on the sound on ‘Yumeno Garden’, a lot of groovy disco rhythms fused with Last Dinosaurs indie sound is quite a beautiful creation which the band should really be proud of. My highlight on the album is the song ‘Itala Disco’, it not only reflects the groovy disco style of the album but also a view of where the band is heading as they mature.

For this stage of where the band is at it’s really important for them to start experimenting with their sound and try to go against releasing the same type of music. On this occasion, Last Dinosaurs have triumphed but It will leave so many people eager to see where they head next.
