Blind Generation - 'Stand Up'
Blind Generation are the latest band to join the ever-growing rise of new political punk bands. Their debut single ‘Stand Up’ suggests they are worthy contenders.
Blind generation – a brand new two-piece punk band hailing from the Isle of Wight ‘who love carrots’ – tackle the problems we all face at home: “No jobs or housing for anyone/Equal pay for those under twenty-one”; and abroad: “Nuclear weapons are hidden away/…/When will you let them rust in peace?” in their first recorded output, ‘Stand Up’.
Under the influence of Slaves, the track is driven by a classic heavy rock power chord riff and snarling vocals, which is akin to what was the 90s/00s American punk scene, in particular Anti-Flag. ‘Warhead’ by UK Subs also comes to mind in ‘Stand Up’. All in all, ‘Stand Up’ is a great punk track, and those who were punks the first time around in the 70s and 80s will enjoy this, even if for nostalgic purposes. ‘Stand Up’ doesn’t leap at you from the speakers as ‘Where’s Your Car Debbie?’ or ‘Well Done’ by IDLES does the first time you hear them, but as a first single, Blind Generation are on to something with power and bollocks, which is good enough for me!
