Album Review: Animal House - ‘Premium Mediocre’

There’s certainly nothing mediocre about new indie darlings Animal House, combining their DIY indie sound with polished Australian wit and humour in the release of their debut LP ‘Premium Mediocre’.

Uprooting themselves from the beautiful gold coast, this quintet decided to swap it for the coast of Brighton to bring their sound to different ears. Animal House fully admit their music is nothing new, with tracks such as the opening track ‘I’m Okay’ very reminiscent of The Strokes. But what they certainly bring to the table is energy and it’s hard not to bop along to each of the 14 tracks.

This band’s energy also translates into their live shows, having seen it first-hand with their support slot alongside Indoor Pets and they certainly left a lasting first impression. By their own admission, ‘Premium Mediocre’ is exactly that, songs made on a shoestring budget but with a premium, catchy sound to leave you wanting more.

I can see Animal House not being everyone’s cup of tea, but there is no denying they’re completely different to any of the up and coming band on the scene right now. Whether it’s peculiar lyrics, blistering energy or roaring riffs, ‘Premium Mediocre’ is the best start to what we can expect to be a long career for the Australians.
