Weird Milk – ‘Time Machine’

Sci-fi rock without any boring Prog nonsense.

You may think that the time machine in weird Milk’s ‘Time Machine’ would be a metaphor for something. But it’s not – ‘Time Machine’ is literally about a building a time machine. Inspired by “an obsession with the documentary Cosmos” and wanting to “get the heck outta here – just for a little while”, Weird Milk have crafted a mesmerising and whacky sci-fi adventure for the ears.

‘Time Machine’ begins with an explosive opening of everything at full whack, but then immediately Weird Milk take everything back, morphing the song into a cool laid-back AM-era Arctic Monkeys vibe. Some Josh Homme-style guitar leads are thrown into the mix here and there, just to stop you from becoming too laid-back. The story-telling lyrics and vocals are reminiscent of The Beatles (a bit Sgt. Pepper maybe?) and the song ends with a circus march outro. This is a lot to take in in under three minutes. But it demonstrates Weird Milk’s ability to write interesting and clever songs. The composition and arrangement is most intriguing, as you think the song is going one way, but it takes you in a completely different direction. Weird Milk must have taken their time machine to a time where what we perceive to be ‘strange’ songs are in fact the norm.
