Tangerine - 'Chains'
Us Brits are never in a shortage of something to complain about. Currently it’s about how much we’d love summer to come around. What could be better than Tangerine bringing us a slice of the sunshine in their new song ‘Chains’.
Tangerine remind me of when Haim first started out, and were putting obscure demos on Youtube – each instrument has its specific place in the song, with little ad-libs thrown in for good measure. The slightly out of tune harmonies in the pre-chorus is charming and induces a small smile each time it comes around. “Love is ours, if we really want it” is the Freudian notion thrown around amidst the dreamy, optimistic sound. There is a Fleetwood Mac, old school quality that comes across in the distant guitars and half-spoken words. ‘Chains’ definitely doesn’t feel like a song that should have come out of this decade, which gives it more of a likability. It is often mentioned to be a surprise that the band moved from gloomy Seattle to sunny LA, after a few years of making waves with their music, but I think it actually makes sense to move closer to a scene that is more familiar and in line with the sound they want to create.
