HOUNDED - 'Hollow' (feat. Panama)

Sydney-based producer Hounded releases vibrant new indie pop single ‘Hollow’ ft. Panama.

If you take out the vocal and lyrics, ‘Hollow’ makes for the perfect soundtrack to an uplifting Kodak advert featuring families, friends and lovers, enthusiastically enjoying life. The track features euphoric synths that instantly make its listener feel good. But the song is also inflected with indie-folk influences that feel organic and grounded but also offers a slice of melancholia and Panama’s ethereal vocal shivers with a sadness that is completely beguiling.

On the motivation behind the track, Hounded explains: I was originally trying to write this uplifting little pop track, but Panama’s lyrics were dark and melancholic, screaming of love loss. That wasn’t how I heard the song at all. But I ultimately realised that these two ideas can coexist in sound, because they coexist in life Someone may be going through a breakup and listen to the record and relate to what Panama is saying and feel some kind of connection to it. While others may hear the uplifting instrumentation and feel a sense of joy. We really tried to capture and contrast both elements because they exist together in the real world”.

In allowing both the sadness and euphoria of love and loss to co-exist together in the soundscape, Hounded and Panama have created a song that ultimately finds light. ‘Hollow’ is a song that recognises being honest about the bittersweet and painful aspects of a relationship not working/ ending can be liberating and that brave first step towards embracing new beginnings.
