KOJ - 'Jenny'

Dark indie three piece KOJ are back with the unforgettable stirring ‘Jenny’, the second single released off of their upcoming debut album, ‘Home’, due out in the next few months.

From the jarringly discordant opening rumbles of the track, ‘Jenny’ strikes you as a single of melancholic, hauntingly gothic beauty. The instrumentals are non-intrusive, creeping at the edges of your hearing, acting as the melodic backdrop on which Alina von der Gathen can lay her celestially powerful vocals; yet some heavy synth throughout lends the track a dark edge that, thankfully, the track never falls from. The whole song is overbearing in it’s disturbingly dark outlook, almost suffocating in its despair, yet remains fresh and exciting; the harmonies sprinkled throughout only add to the track’s eerie nature, a hidden figure mirroring the lyrics. The ghostly vocals in the latter half seem almost ethereal, over a slow staccato drum beat that gradually escalates into an overdriven version of the chorus.

The truly scary thing about the song, though, is that it was written in one day. Written and recorded, or at least a demo version was. But it’s the sheer complexity of the track, it’s layers blending and weaving together to create this musical masterpiece that really speaks about the incredulity of the feat. It’s a credit to the trio’s closeness — being made up of two brothers, the better half of one being the third member — that they can work together so quickly to create such a good song.
