Odd Morris – ‘Cold Water'

A powerful and gloomy take on love and committed relationships.

Odd Morris have shared rehearsal spaces with the big Dublin post-punk bands of 2019 such as Fontaines DC and The Murder Capital. They will also go on to support Shame later this year. But this should not encourage you to assume they are anything like these bands. Yes, their music does sit comfortably in this style. However, Odd Morris are different from their Dublin peers and are miles away from the likes of Shame sonically. And their latest ‘Cold Water’ proves this.

‘Cold Water’ is a gloomy piece; intense without being heavy or abrasive. The guitars are dissonant and brittle, yet beautiful and jangle like wind chimes. The drums bring a restricted energy to the song, like a loaded gun in Russian Roulette. Lyrically, ‘Cold Water’ is vocalist Daragh’s view on relationships: “It was a shock to the system – like how people suddenly gasp in shock when they hit cold water.” This almost cynic view and a hint of grunge in his vocal tone adds more to the intense gloom that ‘Cold Water’ offers.

‘Cold Water’ suggests that Odd Morris could be one of the best new comers in alternative guitar music this year.
