EP Review: Larkins – 'Hit and Run'
Do you remember in 2013/2014, when everyone was obsessed with Bastille? When Dan was crowned most impressive voice of the century and, try as you might, you just couldn’t escape ‘Pompeii’ because it was being played non-stop on the radio? Well, it’s about to happen again and this time, Larkins are the lucky ones. The four-piece from Manchester have just released their debut EP ‘Hit and Run’ and it’s about as stream-worthy as ‘Bad Blood’.
‘Hit and Run’ spans only four tracks but in those few songs, they explore a multitude of sounds and genres. They cover everything from infectious radio-ready anthems (‘Hit and Run’) over re-verb heavy reminiscence (‘Make You Better’) to stripped back sounds that give center stage to frontman Josh’s mesmerising vocals and their hard-hitting songwriting (‘Pieces’). There really is nothing to be missed on this EP. As the saying goes: Less is more or in this case, less is just enough; everything you need.
On this EP, Larkins are doing a great job at mixing “mainstream” elements that attract a wider audience with original indie and thus staying authentic and cool. It’s all about balance and Larkins have nailed it.
