Album Review: Tourists - 'Another State'
A debut album from Tourists has been long in the making, but the Torquay quintet have finally delivered, and we aren’t disappointed as we explore the deepest and shadowy recesses of the human mind on ‘Another State’.
It has been a whole two years since the process of ‘Another State’ began, since the five-piece locked themselves away in their rehearsal space in their native seaside town before moving onto Brooklyn to work with lauded producer Daniel Schlett. That proved the winning formula as we receive an LP that perfectly captures this band’s own brand of dark, melodic pop.
This LP isn’t afraid to take you to a dark place, not only exploring parts of the human mind that are rarely visited, but diving into them head first which in turn creates a piece that draws inspiration from everything, from pop to post-punk to create a world that is multi-faceted and leaves you on a knife’s edge right on through the album’s 11 track run.
‘Another State’ forces you look deeper than just the surface, seeing the multiple layers of influence that lay beneath. Whether that’s the exploration of social anxiety on opening track ‘Silent Type’, the embodiment of post punk’s take on the human condition on ‘Perception Management’, or the turmoil of love explored on ‘Blindside’, there’s truly something for everyone to explore and more importantly to feel on ‘Another State’.
This debut album from Tourists, though long in the making, has truly proven to be worth the wait. Each track has been meticulously thought out and brilliantly executed to the last detail and makes ‘Another State’ of the best debuts for some time.
‘Another State’, the debut album from Tourists is available now on all major streaming platforms.
