LANNDS - 'not in a good way'
US duo LANNDS put a chilled spin on melancholic indie pop on current single, ‘not in a good way', taken from their new EP, ‘lotus’.
It’s been two years since When The Horn Blows was introduced to LANNDS (Rania Woodard and Brian Squillace) off the back of the release of their stunning single, ‘Legends’, which is also the title track of their second EP.
‘not in a good way’ is the duo’s most accessible single from their excellently experimental, new electronic-indie EP, ‘lotus’. While displaying itself as somewhat of a sad bop, ‘not in a good way’ makes use of mellow production that swirls with dreamy, hypnotic textures, making for a relaxing, downtempo listen. Raw melodic riffs and hip hop leaning beats give the track a crunchy edge, ruffling up the cleaner aspects of the track’s production.
Woodard’s affecting, celestial vocal gracefully drives the track into pure evocation, leaving her listener hanging on every aching word as she laments, “you love me not in a good way”. This evocation is only accentuated further by ethereal backing vocals and the appearance of layered vocals harmonies, guaranteeing the emotion of the song is fully realised.
’not in a good way’ is a beautifully crafted single from an intelligently crafted EP, that offers something a little different on a track by track basis.
