Piqued Jacks - 'Golden Mine'
Piqued Jacks offer a mature Italian rock take on life’s insignificance with new single ‘Golden Mine’.
The band from Tuscany took inspiration from a tour experience with an elderly musician in Rome to craft the magical track. Like their previous 2020 singles ‘Safety Distance’ and ‘Every Day Special’, this song showcases their their soaring garage rock sound that desperately seeks large music venues. Piqued Jacks channel the elderly man’s story into a reflection of your time on Earth. Vocalist E-King sings “We are collecting centuries, only letters in history”, and balances this with feeling “insignificant, so small I’m breaking into crumbs”. However, while the words talk of irrelevance, the track proves its worth with a galloping sound accompanying the truth in the vocal. The “old man waving at a ship”, captured so well in the lyrics, also inspires the featured hero sat on the rocks on the glorious cover art by the artist Lunatico.
The band have stuck with what has previously worked for them, using L’esagono studio in Rubeira, and producer Brett Shaw. Brett’s previous work with Foals shares a sonic connection to Piqued Jacks’ creation here. The track suggests we should all aim to leave a legacy behind before death. It also offers an insight into the band’s own next step, with their new album ‘Synchronizer’ set for release early in 2021.
This ‘Golden Mine’ builds my excitement for it, and it looks like Piqued Jacks could have a treasure trove waiting in ‘Synchronizer’.
