EP Review: Nia Wyn - 'Love I Can't Ruin'

If 2019 was the year of sad girl autumn, 2020 is looking to be the rise of a new generation of “take-no-bullshit” women. Confident and strong, asserting their power and independence through music. Rising soul-crossover artist Nia Wyn is one of them and she’s proving just why in debut EP ‘Love I Can’t Ruin’.

From the very first second up until the last beat, Nia takes you on a musical journey that gives a nod of appreciation to soul and RnB. Her raw vocals that, in the course of the EP, paint the full emotional-spectrum from sassy to sensual are impossible to resist, and, without thinking twice about it, you fall for her charm immediately.

Whether she’s telling Catcallers to get lost in (about to be) iconic interlude ‘Last Warning’ or showing her vulnerable side in title track ‘Love I Can’t Ruin’, Nia has got you hooked on sweet melodies and her jaw dropping honesty. Standout track ‘Castaway’ more than anything gives Nia room to show her true colours – she’s not afraid to tell it as it is. In lyrics like “Tired of Brexit, tired of Boris Johnson’s face” and “No one’s gonna make this county great” she unapologetically criticizes the current state of the country and expresses a frustration that is so ever-present in her entire generation.

With her powerhouse attitude and new take on soulful RnB, ‘Love I Can’t Ruin’ puts Nia on the map as one of the most exciting emerging artists in 2020, and hopefully one that will massively influence the sound of the new decade.
