Album Review: Foreign Fields - 'The Beauty of Survival'

Electronic folk duo Foreign Fields release their new album ,'The Beauty of Survival', via Communion Music and it’s the perfect soundtrack to uplift your soul in times of unease.

Prepare yourself for all kinds of wonderful from Foreign Fields’ third album, ‘The Beauty of Survival’ which is a crash course in trying to see the beauty even in the worst of times. The album features previously released songs ‘Don’t Give Up’, ‘Rose Colored’ and ‘Terrible Times’.

’Don’t Give Up’ is a bouncy, woozy and feel-good song that shows off the more organic side to the duo’s sound who state the song is, "about our sometimes flawed attempts at bringing a small hope to those we hold close. It’s about being there with them in their lowest moments and reminding them of how strong they truly are. That they are seen. That they are still alive."

’Rose Colored’ is a more brooding, intimate and slow burning affair featuring a soothing vocal and tender, ambient, instrumentation that subtly swells with emotion alongside the track’s introspective theme as the duo explore “contentment and the paths we take to reach it. It is probably the most autobiographical song on the record that closely follows our path and journey in making this record” pushing its listener into a dreamlike state of self discovery.

’Terrible Times’ marks the final track to be released prior to the album dropping and taps into the duo’s more explorative sound as them combine organic instrumentation with electronic influences to create a surreal and blissfully happy folktronica soundscape to get lost in and it’s my favourite track on the album alongside the visceral ‘Light On Your Face’ that flickers with brooding sensibility and smouldering cinematic appeal.

With nine beautiful, resilient and eclectic tracks to choose from, Foreign Fields succeeds in breathing imaginative and aesthetically pleasing life into soothing indie folk bones, offering a spectacular amount of light and hope to illuminate darker times.
