Squid – ‘Sludge’
The perfect jam for the current climate.
Squid are the hottest band of 2020, and they have just released their latest single ‘Sludge’ having recently signed to Warp Records.
‘Sludge’ begins with and atmospheric and haunting intro in the first few seconds, but then morphs into a sparse yet still going into disco-funk art-punk territory. There are cool scratchy wah sounds coming from the guitars, and you from this you can tell Squid are experimenting musically. For instance, they are creating soundscapes rather than riffs, giving ‘Sludge’ an Apocalypse Now vibe.
Vocally, Ollie Judge stills yaps and screams in that David Byrne style he has. However, lyrically, ‘Sludge’ is more personal and introspective than the characters Squidwitnessed and created in previous releases such as ‘The Cleaner’. It tells a story of isolation – perfect for the current climate we’re in.
Squid are pushing the boundaries with what they can do. Everyone should be excited about this band right now.
