EP Review: Sea Girls - 'Under Exit Lights'

Sea Girls have made the transition from indie darlings to certified rock stars with the release of their new EP 'Under Exit Lights'.

This four-piece have had quite the meteoric rise, with their infectious guitar-led anthems leading them to sign a major record deal with Polydor and tour the world over. 2020 will see them break through the glass ceiling, with their biggest tour to date to follow in the next few months including a sold-out night at London’s Roundhouse, something unheard of for such a relatively new artist.

Half of the six-track EP is made up of previous singles, but that certainly doesn’t mean that they’re not as infectious or rousing with ‘Closer’ being a personal highlight of a track that is enjoyable on repeat. We’re treated to three new tracks and while being moulded into the style of Sea Girls, we do see the quartet explore some new sonic styles and certainly pays off.

‘Timeless’ takes a backseat compared to Sea Girls’ intense style, with a beautiful ballad led by the acoustic guitar, with vocalist Henry Camamile laying it bare about a young love that despite their age, they have something that is destined to last forever. The final track of the EP, ‘Solider On’ sees Sea Girls dabble with techno, with synths leading an powerful anthem that calls for the young generation to pull through all that life throws at them, with a chorus reminiscent of Courteeners’ ‘Are You In Love With A Notion?’ making it one of the best on the EP.

There is no doubt that ‘Under Exit Lights’ is the result of years from hard work from the band and it stands out as the crowning achievement of Sea Girls and will stand them in good stead for what we can expect to be a very bright future.

'Under Exit Lights' EP is available now on all major streaming platforms and Sea Girls will kick off their UK tour at Birmingham's O2 Institute on April 16th.
