Bright Eyes – 'Forced Convalescence'
Following last month’s ‘Persona Non Grata’ marking their return form a nine-year hiatus, Bright Eyes keep the ball rolling with second single ‘Forced Convalescence’ picking apart the human condition and fuelling excitement around their upcoming album.
‘Forced Convalescence’ starts with insistent drumbeats demanding attention and ends with a gospel choir – the ultimate weapon and best way to make sure you drive the message home. And a message there is. Wrapped in velvety smooth, laid-back melodies, Conor Oberst’s signature quivery vocals and reflective lyricism talk about the human experience, growing older and the fact that life’s what we make it. In short, Bright Eyes take you on a rollercoaster ride of existential angst – “I’m not afraid of the future. Have to suffer and repeat. I tend to agree what happens will be pain of my own making cut short by eternity.“
It’s a song that celebrates their long-awaited return, giving OG fans something to gush about while garnering a new fanbase. ‘Forced Convalescence’ (re)introduces Bright Eyes in all their complexity and beauty. Here’s to hoping that their album is equally as mesmerising.
