EP Review: iides - 'Love in the time of Climate Change’
Indie-pop singer/songwriter iides makes an excellent first impression with her debut EP, ‘Love in the time of Climate Change’.
Producer/singer-songwriter iides (Katie Buchanan) kicked off April by releasing a stellar 4-track debut EP, ‘Love in the time of Climate Change’. EP opener ‘World on Fire’ is a scintillating cut of brooding indie pop that sees iides predominately make use of atmsopheric vocals and electric guitars to set a bleak and emotive backdrop to feelings of hopelessness.
’World On Fire’ smoothly transitions into ‘Clear the Air’, seeing iides explore more uplifting and hopeful mood through its touching chiming guitars and suspenseful percussion. The track gradually layers with all kinds of sentimental magic as iides reassures a loved one, “I’ll be there”.
’Shoot Down the Moon’ moves with a spaciousness, exhibiting tangible melancholy, but still feeling danceable and invigorating. ‘Shoes Off’ wrap up the EP showing off a tight bluesy sound to snap your fingers along too.
Through ‘Love in the time of Climate Change’ iides asks the existential question, “How do you write a love song while the world dies? How do you take action when nothing seems to matter? How do you find peace in hopelessness? How do you continue to love all the same?. And while the answers to these questions may not always be clear, iides is successful in exploring despondency and longing through hailstorms of sonic emotion, seeing her EP reach the murkiest depths of feeling thoroughly unsettled, but somehow, still holding on to the light.
