EP Review: Strange Bones – 'Blitz Part 2'

A blitz on the ears that is harsh, but you can’t get enough off it.

Blitz Part 1 was released last summer, a three-track vicious sonic attack that blends the attitude of punk with electronic compositions. Blitz Part 2, also a three-track EP, does the same and they complement each other well.

Whilst Part 1 had the punk guitar singalong ‘Give Me the Sun’, Part 2 embraces Strange Bones’ electronic side. In doing so, Part 2 seems more focused and has a lot more energy and intensity throughout. Opening track ‘Napalm Uber Alles’ was released as a single last November and is a good starting point for the EP. It’s about the “reliance on algorithmic happiness and the negative effects of building ourselves cyber utopias”. It has a heavy Prodigy vibe, yet it is diverse in melody – melodic (almost pop) in the verse, with an explosive chorus. ‘Underdogs’ has just been released as a single too and follows the same formula as ‘Napalm’, with even more emphasis on electronic. ‘Ten Guns’, however, is the most intense of the three tracks. It sounds like the child of ‘Napalm’ and ‘Underdogs’ with its quiet verse/loud chorus and the melodies of the vocals being their catchiest since ‘Give Me the Sun’.

Strange Bones continue to break musical genre boundaries and pull it off perfectly.
