Album Review: The Spitfires - 'Life Worth Living'

The Spitfires have released their latest album Life Worth Living. The Watford three-piece (six-piece when playing live) blend indie, punk, ska, rock-steady and pop to create a sound that is familiar yet enlightening. As it has been produced by Simon Dine who has worked with Paul Weller, you know this is going to be a great record.

And The Spitfires don’t disappoint. There is the Britpop and Mod vibe that grabs you instantly. Combine that with big choruses, Paul Weller wished he wrote these tunes! But it’s not just great choruses and hooks that make Life Worth Living stand out. It’s an ambitious album, and you can tell this immediately from the opening track ‘Start All Over Again’, with it’s string intro that morphs into a huge ska-inspired song. It sets the tone for the rest of the LP, but it’s by no means the same song repeated ten times over. ‘How Could I Lie to You?’ has a completely different sound. It’s piano-based, atmospheric and with a mellow tempo. The Spitfires have been ambitious, but they certainly haven’t been rubbish.
