Album Review: Rews - 'Warriors'
Rews’ powerful sophomore album ‘Warriors’ exists at the crossroads of continuation and restart.
It’s a reboot for Shauna Tohill, taking on the band name on her own, away from the duo that made 2017’s ‘Pyro’.
But from the thirty-five minutes of ‘Warriors’ emerges a continuation of that same Rews sound that marries contemporary rock with the infectious hooks that make the best pop songs.
Shauna’s songwriting will get stuck in your brain, over the top of scuzzy rock moments reminiscent of the 90s alternative era. There are earworms packed throughout, comfort food for the opener ‘Birdsong’, and reminiscent of garage memories when she sings “Do you really like it?” in follow-up track ‘Razorblade’.
The uplifting moments and tough times compliment each other, apt reflections of the Rews experience. Also a vital theme of movement emerges – it’s a soundtrack to a walk, or rocking out if you have the confidence to mosh while social distancing. No wonder ‘Heart Is On Fire’ was inspired by Shauna’s marathon training, dipping slow before building to an energetic frenzy.
The music is full of spirit, perfect for fans of ‘Pyro’, and those who have joined the fanbase along the way through festivals or support slots supporting The Darkness and Halestorm. It’s the kind of sound you would expect from an artist supported by a brand like Marshall, and deserves to be found by passionate fans of new rock music.
It’s an intense experience but warriors invariably try and combat whatever struggles lie ahead. With a team of backing musicians adding to the sound, Shauna proves that Rews are worthy fighters.
