Meadowlark - 'Like a Knife'

Meadowlark inspire hope in the face of political apathy on new single, ‘Like a Knife’

Opening with subtle melancholic keys and Kate’s hushed vocal, ‘Like a Knife’ is a spacious song that sees Kate and Dan aim to encourage unity and hope through the track’s important lyric-led content.

“‘Like A Knife’ was written about the system we all live within; the system that’s built to serve the corporate elite and the governments only,’ Meadowlark explains. “It’s a system we’ve been under for centuries, but the pain and hurt it causes on a daily basis rolls on. We’re no longer shocked when funding is cut or when politicians outright lie. We’re no longer certain of a fairer future because we’ve been shown “life is unfair” time and time again. Determination has turned to apathy. Hopeful has turned to hopeless. But humans - when not living in fear - are resilient, compassionate and loving. And those are the building blocks of an empathetic world. Things have got to change. This song’s for anyone who feels beaten down by the current system, we’re right there with you. “,

As the track develops, it begins to rumble and expand with Dan’s own brand of dreamy orchestral-leaning electronics and snappy industrial percussion, expertly weaving in and out of sparse and fuller sounds. The track beautifully builds into a glistening and disarming climax before fading out on Kate’s softly delivered yet serious mantra, ‘it cut through me like a knife’.

‘Like a Knife’ follows in the footsteps of ‘My Light Has Gone’, a very special song that throws Meadowlark back to their evocative and affecting indie folk roots and ‘Nightstorm’ - the striking and vulnerable title track taken from the duo’s forthcoming album, due for release in November.
