EP Review: Phoebe ∆X∆ – ' Wisdom Teeth, Pt.1'
Self-taught bedroom pop newcomer Phoebe ∆X∆ introduces her take on a coming-of-age narrative on debut EP ‘Wisdom Teeth Pt.1’.
Written, recorded and produced by Phoebe herself, ‘Wisdom Teeth Pt.1’ is a snapshot of her youth, the culmination of young love and teenage anxiety. Across six intricately designed tracks, Phoebe explores themes of identity and getting older to an infectious blend of bold rhythms and euphoric electronica. “I’m dipping my toes in anxiety, love, friendships and mental health and how they were manifesting in my life at that time,” Phoebe says. “Relationships and love are things I like to explore physically and metaphysically - and I’m more discovering the duality of those things in these years. The idea of being a child and an adult, fear and elation, having order and then change, being lost and found, my dream world and the real world.”
Blunt, direct and always true to her heart, the EP thrills with an overarching sense of vulnerability that seeps into its lyricism. “I feel like a train wreck” Phoebe sings on ‘Hurts A Little Less’, capturing not only her introspective take on songwriting. But it’s not just her accessible honesty that makes Phoebe ∆X∆ an exciting artist to look out for. It’s the way she manages to infuse each track with a unique colour palette. Whether it’s the bitter realisations of ‘Things’ or ‘Young Blood’’s sense of invincibility, Phoebe tells entire stories through sound.
Lined with big pop choruses and urgent beats, ‘Wisdom Teeth Pt.1’ sees Phoebe revisiting her past, making peace with all that was. Now, she is ready to take on the future and move into the next era with confident ease.
