EP Review: Vaarwell - 'consume & grow'
Portugal to London duo Vaarwell share slick alt-pop on new EP, ‘consume & grow’
If you’re looking for a lesson in laid-back sounds with a futuristic twist, look no further than Vaarwell’s new EP ‘consume & grown’. The EP opens with ‘tomorrow’, a chilled-out track that opens with lounge vibes, featuring relaxed piano to accompany sweet billowing vocals. As the track develops, minimalist, fluttering electronic texts give the track a moody, otherworldly feel which marks the tone of the whole EP.
’fall back’ follows; a sensual, dreamy song that pairs foreboding futuristic tones with warm hip-hop vibes. Then there’s ‘vertigo’, the boldest and most-sensory song on the EP, inviting its listener to leisurely swim through its blissful layers.
The EP’s closing track is ‘costume’,seeing the duo end as they begin with a minimalistic, moody electronic sound. There’s some really gorgeous layered vocals and intoxicating vox effects to highlight the seriousness of the tracks theme: ‘an emotional appeal from an older to a younger sister about taking the time to grow and mature, being wary of the cruelties of the outside world and the importance of being true to the core values they share.’
‘consume & grow’ is an exhilarating and creatively savvy offering from an exciting duo.
