EP Review: HOT MILK - 'I JUST WANNA KNOW WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I’M DEAD'
It’s time to begin the seance and speak to the spirits, as Hot Milk exclaim a thought as old as time: I JUST WANNA KNOW WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I’M DEAD.
The first extended play dropped since 2019’s Are You Feeling Alive?, it’s been an adventure for the group. Touring halted, recording made complicated, the industry has never been harder for small acts than in the last 18 months, but they’ve managed to fight through it to bring the world more of them. And more is definitely more in this case, as highlighted with the title track, the first single released in support of the EP. It reintroduces Hot Milk to the masses in a thunderous measure, and shows they’re not holding anything back. A lesson perhaps learnt through the global pandemic, translated through the loud and always electric sound they’ve trademarked, shows it to be a success.
Another shining star of the five-track EP is ‘The Good Life’, as being the midway track it confirms the rejuvenation of the band and peeks at the future of their career. There’s no slowing down, no muting, no avoiding their arrival back on the scene. This is also a track that highlights vocalists Han Mee and Jim Shaw as a hand-in-hand tag team - two is better than one, as they say, and it seems they were talking about Hot Milk.
After listening to this record, you will want a slice of the good life!
Staying home and working hard on new music has been proving to be the best positivity to come out of the pandemic, but the specialness of Hot Milk’s resulting EP should not be overshadowed. As a smaller band who were just breaking through pre-COVID, they deserve the love and attention and streaming numbers to make their increased workload worth it.
If this is what happens after you’re dead, then life will never be dull.
