Album Review: AURORA - 'The Gods We Can Touch'

Norwegian songstress Aurora’s angelic dream pop sound should be classed as its own genre, of which her new album ‘The Gods We Can Touch’ is another exquisite example. Fifteen tracks allow us to step into Aurora’s otherworldly world.

She is out of this world, with angelic vocals and a grand, theatrical soundscape she mesmerises and brings a sound that is unique to Aurora as a person, and as an artist. The quirky singer songstress brings a sound that comforts misfits and music-lovers alike. With her new album she subtly leans against a commercial pop sound without shying away from the sophisticated sound she’s designed over the years. With her fifteen track counting piece of art she looks skyward, and talks about shame, desire and morality, seen through the narrative prism of Greek mythology. Aurora elaborates: “The Greeks had gods and goddesses for everything, for anxiety, for wine, for sex… Long ago when this concept of gods and goddesses started they were more human, more relatable, and almost touchable. Most importantly, they had flaws.”

Combining her beautiful voice with piano-driven soundscapes, going back and forth between English and French lyrics, there is nothing conventional about this artistic piece of inventive sounds. ‘You Keep Me Crawling’ is potentially the most theatrical of the album, and ‘Exist For Love’ is its ode to love, translated into a subtle and refined pop song. She blurs lines between genres, creates thumping and dramatic, yet soft and tentative songs with many layers to uncover while listening. She honours women who granted us freedom in this world, creates a sensation that transcends the music, she talks about shame and how we as humans, are in many ways actually quite perfect.

The way she writes, talks, sings and moves is inspiring and makes her such a divine artist. ‘The Gods We Can Touch’ is the exciting next step in Aurora’s musical adventure, and will partly be performed during Aurora’s worldwide digital experience A Touch Of The Divine. This will be a one-off moment airing exclusively on the premium live digital platform Moment House. The one-night-only event takes place on the 25th of January and celebrates the release of the new album!
