Stormzy - 'Firebabe'
Stormzy releases his second single ‘Firebabe’ off his highly anticipated third album ‘This Is What I Mean’ set to be released November 25th.
With the first single off Stormzy’s upcoming album ‘Hide & Seek’ being released last month, the rapper has taken us off guard with his new soft and delicate single ‘Firebabe’. This new track hints at Stormzy entering a slightly new era with his music. Stormzy seems to be choosing a more gentle and romantic-esque style with this song, both melodically and lyrically. Essentially, ‘Firebabe’ is a love song, expressing feelings of infatuation and adoration. With the beginning of the track sounding as if he is experiencing fascination, and as the song progresses, we hear Stormzy fall more in love throughout the song.
Stormzy’s vocals sound incredibly impressive on this track; with his smooth, low tone melding perfectly with the choir-like base layer of harmonies. The featured additional vocals of Debbie, a fellow artist signed onto the 0207 Def Jam label, despite being familiar with the genre she adds a level of vulnerability to the track.
It is unbelievably refreshing to hear Stormzy’s softer side on this single, juxtaposed with his long proven recognisable lyrical rap style that is featured heavily on his previous single ‘Hide & Seek’; highlighting his ability to be incredibly versatile and raw.
‘Firebabe’ is vaguely reminiscent of Frank Ocean’s earlier work, which also featured layered vocals with deep and meaningful lyricism; and with the track's slow, thumping beat, it massively adds to the vulnerable and romantic lyrics. It’s safe to say Stormzy’s new album has got fans itching for the 12 track album set to be released on November 25th; which will solidify his stature, as not only one of Britain's greatest rappers but, as one of Britain's greatest musicians and songwriters.
