Dylan Conrique - 'ugly'
Upcoming pop star Dylan Conrique reflects on tainted memories of a past relationship in new breakup anthem ‘ugly’.
Since her breakout single ‘Birthday Cake’ earlier this year, California-based singer-songwriter Dylan Conrique has quickly established herself as a highly promising emerging artist. Boasting recognitions from Billboard, Wonderland, The Line of Best Fit and more, the 18-year-old is a notable forthcoming name within the pop scene. Despite only making her musical debut in 2020, Dylan has already gained over 180 million collective streams and almost 2.5 million monthly Spotify listeners. From being named as People’s Emerging Artist of 2022, to embarking on her first headline tour, Dylan is already making a name for herself and showing no signs of slowing down.
‘ugly’ is the rising artist’s latest release and describes Dylan’s resentment towards the destructive ending of a formerly happy relationship. The brutal honesty of the record was well-received even before its release, with clips of the song gaining hundreds of thousands of views on TikTok alone. Co-written by Luka Kloser, Dalton Diehl, and Cici Ward, the track showcases Dylan’s cathartic lyricism and captivating vocals, complimented by infectious guitar riffs and heavy synths. ‘ugly’ is the final addition to a trilogy of songs centring around coming-of-age heartbreak, which began with June single ‘i miss you (skin to skin)’ and was later followed by introspective release ‘get over you’.
The music video for ugly was shot over the summer when Dylan was on tour. Featuring snapshots of Dylan parading around the streets of New York and London, the attention-grabbing piece ends with a vibrant performance at one of her sold-out shows. Combining self-filmed footage with cinematic clips, the video cleverly contrasts the vibrancy of romance with the bleakness of cityscapes.
With a recurring role as Tamara Collins in ABC’s hit series ‘The Rookie’, alongside credits she has already gained within the music world, it seems that we can expect to hear a lot more from Dylan in the future.
