Dea Matrona - 'Red Button'
Dea Matrona return with catchy blues-rock single Red Button.
The Belfast duo are back with a fantastic foot-stomper of a track. Red Button follows on from their previous single So Damn Dangerous, another blues track with strong melodies and hearty guitars.
Formed by school friends Mollie McGinn and Orlaith Forsythe, Dea Matrona (meaning “divine mother goddess” in Celtic mythology) started busking in town centres, playing covers of songs by the likes of Led Zeppelin, Cream, Aerosmith, and Chuck Berry. And you can certainly hear the influence of said artists on the band’s music. They have a wonderful vintage sound, without seeming dated.
During this year, they have had a successful time playing shows and festivals across Europe, including Rock Werchter, and are set to support Kris Barras Band next year.
Red Button opens with a catchy, hooky guitar riff, which doesn’t sound too dissimilar to The Edge of Seventeen by the one and only Stevie Nicks. From the first chord, it pulls you in. during the second verse, drums kick in, and you find yourself nodding your head along as you listen. “My mama, she used to say/God is a woman, she won’t let sinners away” the track opens boldly, straight to the point. The vocals are smooth and polished, as is the rest of the production, but at the same time, nothing feels dull or too safe. For a song with a slightly dark tone, it’s a very enjoyable listen. Speaking on the track, the duo said: “Red Button is written from the perspective of observing the world tearing itself apart and being brought to a self-inflicted end in an apocalyptic state. It’s dark, it’s serious, and it’s probably our favourite song we’ve written yet.”
The chorus if definitely where the song truly shines. “Who’s gonna hit the red button?” They sing exasperatedly, repeating the line twice, as guitar parts and drums surge over their lively words.
Let’s hope no one hits the red button quite yet, as I want to see what else these girls have in store for us.
