Introducing #256 - Kaeto

Let us introduce you to Scottish-London based artist Kaeto - who has just released her debut single ‘Good Morning’.

‘Good Morning’ was recorded alongside Pete Robertson, founding member of The Vaccines, whose recent production credits include Beabadoobee (Fake It Flowers), Orla Gartland (Woman on the Internet), Clairo, Pixey and more. On ‘Good Morning’, Kaeto gives life to the negative inner voice, personifying it as a deranged, toxic entity intent on drawing her under whilst boldly confessing “I’m gonna make you feel like a piece of sh*t today”. The track is accompanied by a video which achieves the same, and sees Kaeto embody her antihero with wholly-captivating relish.

She took a moment to talk to us about her music.

Hey Kaeto, how are you? So your debut track ‘Good Morning’ is out now - can you tell us what it is about?
I'm very well - how are you?! Yes it is, it's very exciting! It is a song that aims to encapsulate imposter syndrome. It was a fabulously cathartic piece to work on and I am so pleased it is finally out.

Where are you from and what are your favourite things to do there?
I was born in Scotland but left when I was quite young, moved around a lot and I now live in London (I have done for many years I went to secondary school here too). I love London because it is a really exciting place to be but the prices make the eyes water so most of my favourite things to do are free. I am very boring. I like friends, cooking, walking, attention, any pub, live music, running, eating, spiralling, baths, reading, pretending I've finished books I'm 2/3s of the way through, laughing, thinking about maybe going to the tennis court down the road from us and finally playing a game of tennis, to do something a little fun and different, healthy and outdoorsy, but unable to work out the online booking system and it's probably too cold now, swimming and going to new parts of London that are a bit further out and saying "wow!! this is lovely!!! I can't believe we've not come here before!!"

What are the key influences when it comes to your music?I think I am influenced by everything that I come across in life and that's not always necessarily musical influences. I listen to a lot of talks on youtube about writing processes as a way of thinking about new ways to approach projects and I think that in turn really influences the music. I always like to ask new people that I meet about their own music interests, I think it's the best way to find new music. I love coming across things that make you feel really inspired to work and I was really inspired recently by the new crack cloud album and that was a recommendation. I find collections of music really inspiring and I absolutely love when someone makes you a playlist. I've had a few made for me recently by friends that have been just wonderful. The worlds that they create are themselves very individual and inspiring! I have also been listening to a lot of Nick Drake at the moment and crying on buses.

How would you describe your sound to someone who has never listened to your music before?
With great difficulty, haha. I would say that everything I make is slightly different to what I've made before. I really enjoy not doing the same thing twice. I see so many artists experimenting across genres nowadays, which I absolutely love. I often wonder if it's to do with our modern access to music, we can now listen to such a vast scope of music so easily. I think that this range is really translating into the music that we see from artists today. I would say that my sound is also amusingly varied!

Now the track is out there, what next for you?
More music!!! The next single is out in Feb with a video that I'm ver excited about!!! I think creating the visuals to go with a song is my absolute favourite thing to do. Also shows next year, I'm putting the live show together at the moment, it is such a privilege to have people to play with. I love playing music and jamming with other people and I've always been so desperate to do it so I'm excited that people want to do that with me. As well as writing more music of course! It will all be fun and silly hopefully!
