Begonia - 'Cold Night'
A beautiful and enigmatic video accompanies Begonia’s latest single, ‘Cold Night’ is the wandering and captivating new single from the Canadian artist. Her voice is big and bold, her soundscapes humble and the song’s vocal harmonies angelic.
The single is taken from her upcoming album ‘Powder Blue’ which is due for release in a little over two months. ‘Cold Night’ is a grand and theatrical power pop ballad with a slowly building soundscape that makes for an intriguing listen. Her classic sound with a modern finish is melancholic and comforting and ‘Cold Night’ makes me feel like a blanket is being put over me while I sleep on a bed of grass on a cold winter night. The song truly brings out the creativity of its listener and makes me feel like I have made a new friend. She combined influences from many several genres in the form of heavenly harmonies, thumping R&B-beats and jazzy string arrangements that all come together like they have been married for years.
About her new release, Begonia says: “The song is the breakdown of a horrible life-changing relationship in three parts. Like… Stages of grief, I guess? Verse one is when you’re not ready to let go and just the thought of being ‘left behind’ makes you feel so desperate and detached, like you’re not even human anymore. Verse two is reflecting on the reality of the relationship itself and particular stories that come up only when it’s time to reveal the truth. The last part of the song after the strings hit is all about accepting it for what it is and moving forward. Like sitting in your despair and sadness, but also knowing that it needed to be over and that you did the right thing by walking away.”
The video for the single is divine in its simplicity, focusing on one single location that adds to the feeling of loneliness and desperation. The way she plays with the spotlights focused on her is empowering and almost seems to translate the narrative of the song! The video is an empowering watch and the song an exciting listen, it is something rather different from what I usually listen to, but Begonia has got me swayed - in a very positive way.
