The Artist Explains: Amber Jay - 'Equal'
Liverpool’s alt-pop whizzkid Amber Jay challenges gender stereotypes in the new video for her latest single ‘Equal’.
A song that challenged the inferior feeling that society's version of normal can create. With a bouncy bedroom-pop synth sound that grows into dark alt-pop bliss, it highlighted a pure natural progression for this young artist, and Amber’s ability to ignore boundaries in pure non-conformist fashion to make each genre her own.
She took a moment to talk to us in more depth about the visuals.
Hey there Amber, so ‘Equal’ has had an amazing response so far - what made you want to release a video for the track?
I think the song just had the potential to have a really crazy video and I didn’t want to miss out on making something I could get really creative with.
How does the video connect with the song? What are you hoping people take from it?
I hope people just find it funny to be honest. I tried to make it all seem a little bit of a joke and abit silly, to show how ridiculous stereotypes and pitting against certain groups of society all is anyway.
Where was it filmed?
It was at a sports hall in Birkenhead! All hail Birkenhead! A great place that does amazing work for the community called The Hive wirral youth zone.
Any behind the scenes stories from the filming process?
There was a few…there’s a moment that sticks out when we were all taking lunch. I had made a huge portion of pasta for everyone and we were all just sat around eating out of these tuba-wares with wooden forks in ridiculous wigs and me dressed as a clown. I remember just thinking wow this is art.
Are you a football fan yourself? Which team do you support? Who is your favorite player?
YES. There’s only two things that make me cry instantly in this world and it’s music and football. Liverpool is my team and Mo Salah is my man.
Now the video is out, what does the rest of 2022 hold in store for you?
I’m working on my next EP, finishing writing and getting it recorded! I’m also looking forward to going on holiday
