Introducing #213 - talker

Let us introduce you to talker - the indie rock project of Los Angeles based Celeste Tauchar. She called her music ‘emo indie rock with glitter all over it’.

Starting out touring and playing for other bands including electro-pop group FRENSHIP, Tauchar quickly gained extensive performance experience at venues and festivals like Red Rocks, The Bowery Ballroom (NYC), The El Rey Theatre (LA), Lollapalooza, and Outside Lands.

After years of touring with Frenship and developing her own artistry, Tauchar began independently releasing music under the name “talker”, which received attention from such notable outlets as NPR, Alternative Press, The A.V. Club, Grimy Goods, Buzzbands LA, We Found New Music, and more. Her first singles charted on HypeMachine and were featured on Spotify editorial playlists, all while being independently released and promoted by talker.

Having just released her single ‘My Meds’ - talker took a moment to discuss her music with us.

Hey there - so your new track ‘My Meds’ is out now - can you tell us what it is about?
Absolutely. My Meds is a song about losing yourself in the process of trying to get better. Leveling yourself out just enough so that you’re not sinking, but you’re also just treading water. Not feeling so sad anymore, but also not really feeling anything else either. I tend to feel "adjacent" to a lot of emotions while I'm trying to pull myself out of something.

Where are you based - what are your favorite things to do there?
I'm based in LA! I really love going to shows here. Obviously, it's a huge city for music and so on any given night I can go see an insanely great band play. I missed that a lot during the pandemic and I've loved being able to do it more often recently. I also love being able to hike & go to the beach easily. I think I'd go crazy if I couldn't spend a lot of time outside.

Where do you go for adventures?
I love driving up the coast to Santa Barbara & San Luis Obispo. I try to make it up to Big Sur at least once a year too. The central coast of California in general is my favorite place in the world. That area actually had a huge influence on my upcoming EP.

What are the key themes and influences when it comes to your music?
My influences are really across the board. I think it's obvious to listeners that I pull from a lot of the indie rock spectrum, but I really love hyperpop and singer-songwriter stuff. But really everything. At the end of the day I think one of the things I'm most meticulous about is my lyricism, and if you had to take away everything and I could only pick one thing, it would be to just write all day. So regardless of genre I love anybody who's creating really interesting & well-crafted songwriting.
As far as themes go, I tend to write a lot about identity and self-reflection. It's something I think we all struggle with, but it's been something I've really zeroed in on over the last few years. I feel like I'm constantly shifting and changing. And I think that's a good thing, but it can definitely lead to some internal question marks.

How would you describe your sound to someone who has never listened to your music before?
Indie rock with glitter all over it. I'll let you interpret that how you want.

Now the track is out there - what next for you?
Yes! So my EP "In Awe of Insignificance" comes out in a couple weeks, on Friday March 25th. It's a long EP, 8 songs actually - and it's absolutely the best body of work I've ever put out. I'm insanely proud of it and not afraid to say that it's really good. I can't wait for these songs to be out. I'm also playing LA's School Night showcase to celebrate the release on March 28th, and am currently putting some tour plans together for the summer. It's gonna be super busy but I'm ready to not sit at my house anymore.
